Predictive Genetic Testing

Predictive genetic testing can help you understand whether you have inherited a known genetic variant (gene fault) that runs in your family. If a specific gene fault has already been identified in a relative, testing other family members becomes much more accurate and meaningful.

What Predictive Testing Can Tell You

Predictive testing looks for the same genetic change found in your family and can help estimate your future risk.

  • If you do not have the gene fault, your risk of developing the condition is the same as the general population.
  • If you do have the gene fault, you may have a higher chance of developing the condition and may pass the gene fault on to your children.

If Your Test Result Is Negative

(You did not inherit the gene fault)

A negative result can bring significant reassurance.

  • Your risk is not increased — it returns to the same level as anyone else in the population.
  • You cannot pass the gene fault to your children.
  • No extra screening is needed beyond routine health checks recommended for everyone.

This result often brings relief to individuals and families who have been living with uncertainty. However, it can also bring complicated feelings, particularly if other relatives have inherited the fault.

If Your Test Result Is Positive

(You did inherit the gene fault)

A positive result does not mean you will definitely develop the condition, but it does mean your risk is higher. You may be offered:

  • Risk reduction such as lifestyle changes, medication, or preventive surgery.
  • Increased surveillance, for example MRI scans, colonoscopies, or heart monitoring.
  • Family planning support such as preimplantation genetic testing to reduce the chance of passing on the gene fault.
