What are BRCA1 and BRCA2?
BRCA1 and BRCA2 are genes that all humans have. Their normal function is to help repair DNA damage and protect against cancer. However, if a person inherits a pathogenic variant (a harmful change or "fault") in one of these genes, they have an increased risk of developing certain cancers, most notably breast and ovarian cancer.
Why do we test 12 genes?
While BRCA1 and BRCA2 are the most well-known, there are other genes linked to an increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer. Our comprehensive breast cancer panel tests the following 12 genes:
Who should consider testing?
You may wish to consider genetic testing if you have any of the following:
- A strong family history of breast, ovarian, or prostate cancer.
- A personal previous diagnosis of breast or ovarian cancer, particularly at a younger age.
- A known genetic variant (such as a BRCA1 or BRCA2 fault) already identified in a relative.
- Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry, as certain BRCA variants are more common in this population.
Understanding Your Results
Your test can return three possible outcomes. Your genetic counsellor will explain exactly what your specific result means for you and your family.
Positive (Pathogenic Variant)
A gene fault was found, explaining a higher risk of certain cancers. We will discuss appropriate screening, risk-reducing options, and implications for relatives.
Negative
No gene fault was found. If there is a strong family history, we will still provide personalised screening recommendations based on that history.
Variant of Uncertain Significance (VUS)
A change in the DNA was found, but it is not currently known if it affects the gene's function. Usually, this is managed like a negative result until more is known.
