Raising Awareness of Hereditary Cancer at the West Indian Community Centre Genetic Counsellor

•Genetic Experts

Lily White, Genetic Counsellor at Genetic Experts, recently attended an event at the West Indian Community Centre, where she joined BBC Derby's Becky Measures to help raise awareness of hereditary cancer.

Becky shared her personal story and spoke about her campaign to improve awareness of hereditary cancer. During her talk, she invited Lily to answer questions about genetics, inherited cancer risks and the importance of understanding family history.

The session included an engaging question-and-answer discussion, giving community members the opportunity to learn more about how genetics can influence cancer risk and when genetic counselling may be helpful.

Continuing the conversation

After the talk, several attendees approached Lily privately with questions they had not felt comfortable asking in front of the larger group.

These conversations highlighted the importance of providing a welcoming and supportive space for people to discuss personal concerns about cancer and their family history.

At the end of the event, Becky also interviewed several community members who had been affected by cancer for her BBC Derby radio programme, giving them an opportunity to share their personal experiences.

Events like this help break down barriers, tackle misconceptions and encourage more open conversations about hereditary cancer.

At Genetic Experts, we believe understanding your family history is an important step towards understanding your health.
