Vicki Kiesel joined BBC Radio Derby and the National Hereditary Breast Cancer Helpline to raise awareness of family history, genetic risk and informed choices.

Consultant Genetic counsellor Vicki Kiesel was proud to support BBC Radio Derby’s It Starts With You inherited cancer awareness campaign as a genetics expert at an Age UK event in Chaddesden, Derby. The campaign is encouraging families to talk openly about their medical history, understand when cancer may be hereditary, and seek appropriate advice about genetic testing and risk management.

The event brought together members of the public, BBC Radio Derby, and Wendy Watson MBE, founder of the National Hereditary Breast Cancer Helpline. Wendy’s pioneering work has helped many families affected by hereditary breast cancer access information, support and peer connection at a time when the decisions they face can feel complex and emotional.

Vicki spoke with families about the importance of recognising patterns in family history, including cancers occurring at younger ages, and multiple relatives affected by the same or related cancers. These conversations can help people understand whether they may benefit from referral to clinical genetics services, enhanced screening, preventative options or support to share information with relatives.

“Family history can be a powerful tool. When people understand what has happened in their family, they are better placed to ask the right questions, access appropriate support and make informed choices. I was delighted to support this campaign and help families feel more confident talking about inherited cancer risk.” — Vicki Kiesel

Inherited cancer risk does not mean that cancer is inevitable, but it can change the advice a person or family may need. Genetic counselling provides space to explore family history, discuss the benefits and limitations of testing, consider the possible impact on relatives, and make decisions that feel right for each individual.

Campaigns such as It Starts With You are important because they make inherited cancer risk easier to talk about. By raising awareness in local communities, they encourage earlier conversations, clearer signposting and greater confidence for families who may otherwise be unsure where to begin.
